The Silk Road

by Jane Summer

Alyson, $12.95 trade paperback Reviewed by Anthony Glassman

In a bit of advance praise for this book, Emma Donoghue; author of Hood and Stir Fry, said "The Silk Road captures the true queerness of adolescence." Truer words ne'er were spoke, as the saying goes.

This is a wonderful book about a deeply unhappy teenager trying to escape the bourgeois mundanity of her life and the petty hostility of her shallow and vain mother.

The journey through adolescence takes the reader from the late sixties into the early seventies, with a panoramic backdrop of New York State suburbia— Woodstock, tract housing, avocado-colored kitchen appliances, and a virtual museum of cars. Cars are mentioned everywhere in this book.

Dietrich with a young son and a fat husband, exotic and domestic in one disharmonious package. Paige's attraction to Fiona is one of the strongest threads holding this book together, the boldest motif in the tapestry of the novel.

There is an overall strangeness to this book that's hard to pin down. The phrasing is sometimes odd; when it's first read, it sounds wrong, but when it's read again, it sounds

perfectly normal. It adds to

the pseudo-familiarity of the universal themes of adolescence transplanted to Hell, the suburbia so like any other and yet so different.

Throughout the book, it is easy to feel Paige's alienation; teenage years weren't so very long ago. The fact that we don't necessarily recognize the specific places she mentions makes the alienation complete; we recognize the type of place she's talking about, but not the one she means. It's kind of like going to a Circle K down South; it's almost a 7-Eleven, but different in a subtle way.

The Silk Road

The story takes place in a suburban hell, literally: the town of Hell, N. Y., where Paige Bergman lives with her parents. She goes through the same embarrassments as everyone else, giving the reader a pleasant sense of déjà vu. Her one escape is her fantasy involving a housewife in a Plymouth Barracuda, Fiona Gallagher.

Fiona is a grown-up Lolita; a Marlene

That might be the best way to sum up this book: everyone's youth, but different in a subtle way. Jane Summer has crafted a classic, universal coming-of-age tale, one that surpasses qualification as a “lesbian" novel, or "gay" fiction, and is truly accessible to anyone wanting to read a well-written novel.
